Planning a Private Party in London? Here’s How I Approach Photograph

book an event photographer

The parties are never the same, which is exactly what makes them interesting to photograph. The real moments do not happen in one location or with some agreed-upon system of decorating but occur randomly during conversations when laughter springs forth as a reflection from one person standing close behind another.

As a private party photographer in London, I am not there to produce or design anything. I simply watch and record what happens naturally.

Before the Party - A Bit of Planning Goes a Long Way

A little bit of pre-planning is very important, no matter how small or big the party is, because that’s the key to celebrating a memorable party. For this reason, I understand the timing, the location, and the kind of celebration you’re putting together before the party begins.

As importantly, what do you want to remember from it? People often ask me how to book an event photographer, and you know what? It usually starts with just a simple talk that early conversation will determine how I cover the event.

How Long Do You Actually Need a Photographer?

How long should you hire a party photographer? is one of the questions I get all of the time.

Most parties, to be honest, don’t need full coverage, just the right pieces of the evening. Arrivals, where the energy gets ratcheted up, and those organic interactions matter most.

The duration for which you should hire a party photographer doesn’t depend on a fixed number of hours but rather depends on the flow of your event.

On the Night - Keeping It Natural

For the evening, my priority is to keep things natural. I tend not to direct people and interrupt moments; I become sulky. Usually, guests are oblivious to the camera.

As a private party photographer in London, I’m just noticing that this all exists, it’s happening, and I try to capture the moment occurring in real time instead of staging things.

Final Thoughts

After the party, you have images that show the night's true feel, not just the highlights but the vibe. Over time, that matters more than anything.

At Jonny Donovan Photography, my focus is always on creating something real. If you’re planning a party, feel free to get in touch.
