What Happens When You Leave Photography Until the Last Minute
Nothing dramatic really happens when you leave photography until late. That’s the part most people don’t expect.
You reach out, and your preferred destination wedding photographer is already booked. Or the ones you come across are free, but you’re still figuring out if they’re actually right for you. Everything moves quicker than it should (you don’t really get the chance to settle into it).
Even choosing between wedding photography packages starts to feel like a fast decision instead of something considered. And over time, it shows, not in a big, obvious way, but in how everything feels a little more rushed, a little less connected.
So what really happens?
The Choices Start to Feel Limited
This is usually the moment the question comes up, “How far in advance should you book a wedding photographer?" and it’s not random. It’s because the options are already starting to thin out.
There are still photographers available, yes. But the feeling is different now. You’re not exploring, you’re narrowing down quickly (sometimes quicker than you’d like).
A few portfolios might stand out, but not in that instant, in this kind of way. And that’s where it shifts quietly. It becomes less about choosing someone you love and more about choosing from what’s left.
The Experience Feels More Rushed
It’s pretty obvious that booking photography at the last minute can make the whole process feel hurried.
There’s less time to chat.
There's less time to comprehend your movements, interactions, and true nature as a couple.
That familiarity is what always helps me to capture natural, candid moments. Without it, the photos still happen, but they can feel a little stiffer, even if you don’t notice it at first.
The more time we have beforehand, the more relaxed and real the pictures end up feeling.
Photography Packages Become a Quick Decision
Late booking often turns wedding photography packages into a quick, almost automatic decision. You scroll through options, grab what’s left, and move on.
Ideally, it should feel different.
You’d have time to see what fits your wedding
What matches your vibe
What actually feels right
Instead of hurried choices, it becomes a deliberate, thoughtful decision that shapes how your story is captured on the day.
And Obviously, I’m Often Already Booked By Then
By the time most couples reach out, I’m often already booked. As a wedding photographer in London, popular dates and seasons fill up fast, and I’ve usually committed to other stories before some people even start looking.
That’s why the early conversations matter, not the packages or the fancy details, but just getting to know each other. On the day, the best moments aren’t planned; they’re noticed by me and captured in the best way possible. Capturing them only really works when everything leading up to it feels easy, relaxed, and natural.
So if you’re even thinking about your dates, drop me (Hi, I'm Jonny!) a message, let’s see if we can lock in your day before it’s all gone.
