What It’s Like Working as an Event Photographer in London

There is a unique rhythm associated with each and every event held in London. Conferences can be quite structured, panel discussion sessions have a definite focus, while networking sessions are fluid. 

When people think of hiring a photographer for an event in London, they may expect a few selected moments to be recorded. But usually, there is constant activity with smaller interactions taking place on a regular basis.

I am always a part of the process and observe rather than direct proceedings.

Here’s how. 

Arriving Early, Reading the Room First

Early arrival before the start of the event is part of my routine, giving me enough time to grasp the movement at the event, the gathering at the event, and the play of light in different locations.

Generally, I take the time to move around the event and get a feel for the event space and natural events that happen at different places. This automatically influences what happens in my conference photography.

This process is not based on planning specific shots; rather, it involves understanding the space first.

Moving Through the Event Without Interrupting It

At the onset of the event, I quietly go from one moment to another as they come along. These include speeches, audience responses, intermission talks, and even brief interstitials that sometimes have the same weight as the actual agenda itself.

Especially during panel discussions, however, it takes something else to capture their essence. This is a setting where you’re always conscious of time, responses, and the flow of the discussion. Being a panel discussion photographer in London is never about entering the right place at the right time; rather, it’s about staying on your toes without disrupting the flow of things.

Going With the Natural Flow of the Day

The most memorable and powerful experiences usually come through the interstices between the organized events, such as when people unwind in conversation or express themselves more freely in reaction to the proceedings. This is not an experience that people would always associate with event photography services in the UK.

Closing Thought  

Even events that are similar in theory turn out to be entirely dissimilar after people arrive and settle into the environment. This is one of the reasons why the work is so exciting for Jonny Donovan Photography, because all events have their own natural flow.
